Opinions on a 400

I found a 400 for sale locally and I wanted some opinions about it. the motor was rebuilt by previous owner it ran good. Everything seemed to be in good working order, PTo, fast hitch, TA. The rear tires were good too. new radiator. The paint isnt the best, kind of a sloppy paint job. It has a wide front end, an orginal loader, bucket, and loader snowblower attachment, new light duty king kutter 6ft blade and a fast hitch adapter. therre is also some play in the steering. its located in mid-michigan he wants $5800 for it. Im not sure what tractors like this are going for around here. does it sound like a good deal or should i keep looking around?

Seems like a maximum price. THe tractor and equipmemt is a great bargain compared to newer tractors that cost more, nut I think it is 1200 too high for a usable 400 (market thinking, not an analysis of true usable value. Jim

Sounds high until you figure the cost of new tires now, but with all the equipment that goes with it, I would say it's pretty close.
They make handy tractors.

If it is what you want and you want everything he has, why argue over a few dollars. On the other hand if you want a better looking tractor, then walk away. If you do not need or want some of the equipment he is offering, again walk away. But if the voice you hear is saying buy it, do it and be proud of yourself for getting what you wanted.

If it was just the tractor I would say that is anywhere from $2300-3000 too high if the tires aren't at least usable. New tires would change the whole outlook.

I tend to be generous with my estimates of tractor value, much to my dad's chagrin.

With the equipment, it depends on what you're getting. The loader would have to be a modern, full-hydraulic unit. The snowblower would also have to be a fairly modern unit.

It sounds just a little high - but if it is what you want it's not out of line. I can't say for sure without know what tractor mounted snowblowers sell for.

By itsself the tractor would sell in the $2000 to $3000 range in my area (Kansas). I don't know what you mean by original loader - if its an old "33" style with a trip bucket its worth about $400 - $600. If its a more modern style its $1000 to $2000 or more.

Seems a touch high, but I don't want all that other stuff.

How would a 400 work on a snowblower? The only thing I have seen work well on a blower is a hydro or a modern 20+ speed tractor with a creeper reverse. All these old tractors go too fast. Just like rototilling...

Might be a bit high, but then a seller ALWAYS starts high, and considering all the equipment you are getting with it, the asking price is not all that far off. Offer him $4,000, and see where it goes. Just keep in mind that a pair of new rear tires today will set you back at least $1,000, and a GOOD loader will sell for around $3,000 or higher. And for what it's worth, that wide front axle would bring around $800 all by itself.

Alright thanks for the info guys. I thought the price was a little high. I'm going to see if he will just sell the tractor. the rest of the sutff im not interested in.

My 1952 WD has done fine, so far.

Unless you already have a loader tractor you will probably want the loader. Even an old loader is a whole lot better than no loader. You'll be surprised how often you use it.

Looks functional to me Dave. I played with the neighbors on their 4430 and 4840 and it was just too fast. Then again the only time we use the blower is when there is WAY too much snow for a pickup.

(quoted from post at 09:21:29 03/30/12) just saw a CL add here with a 400 with the TA out and bad tires. Guy was asking $2400.

My word! Several years ago I sold a good running 400 with working TA and powersteering and almost new tires for $2200...
