IH#50 Red versus 2150

Ok, I know this gets beat to death but I need help on deciding which shade of red to paint my "44 H. I need to see a picture with 1 tractor in IH #50 and 1 with 2150 together in the same light. I have researched this site and the web but with lighting and camera settings it is hard to tell which one looks better to me. I will be using Nason Ful-thane paint. I'm not concerned with the "proper color" but I want to be happy with how it looks. I don't have the option to look at any shows etc. before I paint.

Thanks,
Rick

Talk to a local body shop & get their advice on brands & types of paint available & pricing, once you decide, take a part that was hidden and still has the original paint & have the paint company match it. You can even go a bit darker ( not much) or even lighter to suit your idea of what shade of red you are looking for.
Check out automotive shades, Dodge ( ram p/u) & GM (Corvette & p/u)have some reds that you might prefer, also, some fire engines are painted with a very deep bright red.
IMO the new 2150 seems a bit orange compared to some earlier restorations, it looks fine until you park it next to an older paint job that still looks good, the shade is very close, but you can tell a difference.
But as they say, it's your tractor, you can paint any color you want !!
Except green of course.

A picture? The only way you are going to get a perfect comparison is to paint two tractors under the same conditions with the two paints. Even then they will look different to you than they look to me. I wouldn't worry about it myself. Red is red.

Use a good high quality paint with hardener and clearcoat.Otherwise it will turn pink in a few years.

I believe the IH#50 would be period correct, but when IH introduced the #2150, they obsoleted the #50. IH wanted ALL their tractors to be IH #2150 rouge red. And for what it's worth, the IH #2150 from your local Case-IH dealer is excellent quality paint. It will result in a very high gloss even without hardener, and if hardener is used, the results will be dazzling. The #2150 is also very fade resistant.

I think we need a database on who painted what color and what brand. You could then sort by state who has what and look at it to see if you like the color.

ex
Rusty has a tractor painted with CNH 2150 in ____, IA.
CNKS has a tractor painted with DuPont Nason #50 in ____, KS

I have pictures of the same tractor, taken on the same day, and the paint can look different shades to me between the pictures. I would be interested to see a side by side picture as well, but I doubt anyone has it.

In the end, it's going to come down to your personal preference. IH50 for a deeper red or 2150 for a color that's still red, but had a tinge of orange to it. Correct color is IH50, but if you have a fleet of tractors, I'd want them all to match. So if you have "newer" tractors that you are going to eventually paint as well, I'd do them all in 2150. JMO

My H that was painted with the 2150 is currently buried in the shed. In a few more days I will have out, and if the sun is shining, I will snap a picture. Athough depending on the computer you use to view that picture, it might not be a true representation of what the tractor looks like in person.

(quoted from post at 08:52:34 03/30/12) I thought "truer" color was shown in partly cloudy rather than full sun weather.

You may be correct on that, but for sure the tractor needs to be outdoors, in NATURAL light. Not in a shed with flourescent or incandescent lighting, or illuminated by the flash from a camera.
