farmall h died on me

Scenario-I was mowing grass with a Farmall H, 1950, pulling a Woods RM-59 finish mower....all was good for a couple of hours, then without warning, it was as if someone pushed the kill switch, and everything ground to a halt. Since then, I checked for faulty wiring, checked the gas and the strainer, checked for fire at the coil, had none. There was power to the coil, but no spark coming from it. So, to save the hassle(which it has now become) I bought a new 6V coil and a set of points and condenser. I set the points gap at .020, installed everything, and now the tractor runs rough and stalls under a load. Please give me a few pointers.

First thing I would do is put the old condenser back in and try it. If it runs good then you got your self the common now days bad condenser right out of the box. If that does not help try the old coil do not take out that condenser. If it still runs bad check you spark from the coil wire to the block and make sure it is a nice blue/white spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap or more. Shoot you might check your spark first for that matter because if it is good then you need to check the fuel flow out the bottom of the carb drain plug and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas for a few minutes catch the gas to check for dirt etc

I'm gettin old too. There was a time when changing points, plugs, and tires was just part of life and not a hassel. Always kept spares on hand.

Hi Greg-
Did you have the plug wires off? One time I got two of mine mixed up and didn't realize it until after scratching my head for an hour.

If you are running a 12v battery, check your resistor. You might be getting too much/little voltage to your coil and frying your condenser. You might also check the gap between your points.

sounds alot like a bad condensor. Original problem sounds like a failed coil. without actually being there, hard to tell, but you are headed down the right road.

As was stated, try old condensor. With the new condensor's, it is a crap shoot.

Well, I left the new coil on and put the old condenser back on and it is back running. I hope that was the problem.
