i have a farmall m that i recently got, its the only red one in the herd so im not to familiar with them, i was looking through the owners manual and from what i gather you can only operate a one way cylinder, is this correct? of is there a way to hook up a two way cylinder?

It is an open center hydraulic system. It will accept open center valves singly or in ganged sets. It is not a live system, but it will work at 700psi.
The control rod is pulled back and locked (with a split tube hose clamped to the rod to hold it in place.
This diagram will help. Jim

You can hook up any two way cyl, but you won't have down pressure. Just hook up the up hose and you are done. Tie your other one up safely.

What Jim says is correct, but I believe he grabbed the wrong jpg image as it shows a conversion to the engine driven pump.

For a regular ol' M with liftall, and using Jim's diagram. Connect the blue return line to the fill cap on the reservoir. Point it straight into the reservoir and come off with a T on the side for your vented filler cap. Connect the red line to any of the three outlets on the side of the tractor and simple plug the other two.

The hydraulic pump will run any time the clutch is out. The handle on the side basically operates a bypass and pulling the handle back closes a relief valve and causes the pump to generate pressure.

Right, any twoway will work, but you have to remove
the unused hose to vent the 'backside'..Otherwise
you will get a airlock wich must be vented.

Yes, I use a two - way cylinder on my SH with stock Lift-All for corn picker and mower, the weight of the implement retracts the cylinder. I hook both hoses up and vent the unused hose back to a tee where the fill cap is. This keeps everything clean of dust and field trash etc. So on the back of my H it has the two couplers like a two - way system would have , only it is single acting. Works nice.

That is the way I plumbed my neighbors.

My 1939 Farmall M has a hydraulic system fitted to it, driven by the standard liftall pump. It has a two way cylinder for the bulldozer blade (genuine IH) and operates a two way remote control cylinder (not at the same time as the dozer blade cylinder). It also has IH (Australia only) 3 Point Linkage fitted, but I cannot operate the three point linkage and a remote control cylinder simultaneously.
