refilling 350 hydraulic system ?

When we split the tractor we had the hydraulic lines off and drained the reservoir. The manual says that all that needs to be done is fill the reservoir and work the levers to prime the pump and work the air out of the system. Does this really work ?

The fill plug for the hydraulic reservoir is lower than the pipes running to the pump. The suction side of the pump needs to move a lot of air to get any oil.

Is there a better way to fill the system ?

Is Hy-Tran a suitable replacement for 'Hydra-Touch' or 'Touch Control Fluid' ?

Thanks

Rebuilt my power steering last week and filled mine per the manual took about 5 mins of working the handles and driving it around to work the air out. But it did work.

Not good to run the pump dry for more than a minute or so. Often, just running the nose of the tractor down into a ditch will get it going. Better yet, a little air pressure in the reservoir to prime it. The breather on reservoir may need to be plugged if you don't have a good volume supply of air.

The tractor probably already had HyTran in it.

"Hydra Touch fluid" is what they had before HyTran. It hasn't been available since the early 1960's. Hytran replaced it.

If you haven't run the tractor, drained the lines, or removed the hydraulic pump, the pump will already be primed. Simply fill the reservoir and run it.

Using air pressure was an elegant solution, it worked great. I left the lines a little loose at the pump so I could see when I had oil there.
