JD #5 sickle mower

When mowing grass or brome with an H and a JD #5 sickle mower what works best: a sickle with a smooth or serrated sections? Or does it even make a difference?

Smooth sections need to be sharp even if you have to grind them. Serrated sections will go longer before being dull is an issue. There once were stones cut with guides just to sharpen smooth blades. We had one.

I have a John Deere no. 8 sickle mower,I have serrated sections in it,seems to work fairly well.I had trouble with it plugging on the end until I put a double section in. Keep in mind to mow grass your ledger plates and wear plates need to be in good shape. Hope this helps.

I always use under serrated sections and never have needed to sharpen one. They tend to be self sharpening. They last a long time and when they get worn I just replace them. If you don't have small stones or something else hard in your hay they will last for years.

When cutting grass one of the main considerations is keeping the sickle down on the ledger plates tightly. I have used over serated and underserated sections and don"t know there is much difference in cutting. I used my #8 last year and tried one of the adjustable hold downs as used on jd swathers and that seemed to work well,
