H transmission ratio

I am restoring a 1944 H and I bought a "41 to use for parts. In the trans I found out that they have different ratios for 3rd and 4th gear. Neither tractor is a Super H but that is the only different ratio that I can find. Did the regular H have different ratios for different years? I hope I can just switch the countershaft with the gears to make it work. I have to check out the PTO drive.

The Super H would also have a different 2nd gear, I think. I have heard that M+W offered an aftermarket 7 mph 4th gear option, but I didn't ever hear of a 3rd being offered by them.

NOT M&W. The optional 7mph 4th gear was offered through IH as an "attachment".

In World War 2, there was a rubber shortage that forced companies to go to steel wheels. I think they slowed down the higher gears and locked out 5th to make the tractor safer.

Has nothing to do with WW2. 5th gear was locked out on steel wheeled tractors. None of the gear ratios were changed.

Think there was at least one aftermarket made gear ratios for 3rd and 4th. You may just have a tractor someone installed W4 gears in though. Number from gears or tooth count may help ID them.
Some early H tractors have different gears even if the same ratio than the biggest part of them. Can't remember if 41 is new enough to not worry about that or not. Check the parts.

Tractor Supply Company used to have a high speed transmission kit but it changed 2nd gear to what third was, changed third gear to what used to be 4th gear and increased 4th gear to a speed between the old 4th and 5th gear.

It worked out OK for hauling wagons but the loss of the 2nd gear speed pretty well ruined it for any tillage work.

I will be taking the rest of the '41 apart this weekend and either use the entire countershaft if the pto drive is the same, or just switch the gears from one countershaft to the other. I hope the splines are the same?
