Helping a neighbor whos Micormic Farmall 100 , would not run ,
Engine would not turn over , we dropped oil an this morning and the crank is broken . What could have caused that
I have been on here this morning looking for the serial numbers and casting codes . Where is that info ?
C-123 engine serial # 25247
CC on block 354898-R3
Tag gone for Tractor serial number .
What would your suggestions be to fix this ?
We are looking at all options

turning it over with water in a cylinder?

Would think it'd more likely bend a rod, but imagine it could break a crank too.

Then it could leave little evidence behind other than the break itself.

Perosnally I'd search for a replacement engine first as it may end up being cheaper overall - depending on what your end goal is.

Otherwise I'd strip the block down and have it magnafluxed for stress cracks.

O broken crank can be a pretty serious jolt to the system.

Check your vavle stems and pushrods for straightness too.

If it all checks out, I wouldn't trust any of the major components, I'd bite the bullet and buy a full rebuild kit - new rods and pistons - and obviously find a new crank.

Does it have fire-crater or high compression pistons in it? If it does you need the right advance plate in the dist. so the spark isn"t too far advanced. Also pounding the front pulley on can stress them & break later.

The crankshaft may have failed from metal fatigue. I would have the block magna-fluxed and another used crankshaft. We had a brand new crankshaft to break in a new engine. It was from a military vehicle and we were running it on a stationary dynamometer. I was on the midnight shift and the engine made a terrible noise and the scale reading on the dynamometer was vibrating bad. I shut the engine down and called the project engineer at home. He said to
standby until he arrived.

When he arrived he wanted to hear the engine noise so I stared the engine and he said to shut it down, but it took awhile since the dynamometer
kept spinning the engine. We took an oil sample and pulled the engine off the test stand after disconnecting all the instrumentation. Dropped the oil pan and found the crankshaft had broken in the counterweight. The dayshift installed a new shaft and the second shift installed the engine on the test stand. The test continued when my shift started and we had
no more failures. Hal

In the 1960's my uncle's Farmall "C" broke it's crankshaft. It had super "C" pistons.

Where is crank located and how much are you asking for it ?
Can you send pics
