Finally got my H running!!! (strange but true)

Today, with a little help from a friend, I got my H running. Strangely enough, when I timed the engine using the timing marks on the crank pulley, the engine wouldn't run. It would however make a puff sound through the exhaust every once in a great while. After using a straw to determine top dead center and timing the engine "by eye" it fired right off and ran great. The mag snaps about 3/4 of an inch before the timing marks on the pulley. Any guesses as to why this might be? Different cam? Wrong pulley? Beats me, I'm just glad its runnin!!! There again, I'm still curious about this strange timing. Kippster

mags are more tricky to time than the distributor due to the impulse coupling. the engine will run 3/4 " either way of the timing mark. easiest way to time it now is with a timing light. time it to the mark and see what happens. right now it is advanced and should be wanting to kick back when starting. i think it was 180 degrees out the first time you time you timed it.

If everything else checks out(bad key way, ect!)You CAN check the degree mark on the pully, but you will have to remove the rocker arms or back the adjusters all the way off. on #1 hole.(I know,REAL Pain in the @ss)You do not want interfereance with the valves and the piston stop.

But ,if you wanna do it,make a piston stop out of an old sparkplug with a bolt welded on the end of it.hand thread it in the sparkplug hole.Roll the engine one way GENTLY by hand unitll it touchces the stop,Make a mark on the pully right at the timimg pointer. Then, roll the engine back the other direction untill it touches the stop again,Mark the pullt at the timing pointer.

Take a flexible machinist ruler and measure between those 2 marks.Does the original mark fall DEAD between the 2??? If it does, hub is marked correctly. If not the mark IS off.

This is alot of trouble to check it this way,but does proove it out!.Your pully isnt "double marked " like some are for 0 deg AND advanced,is it,and one is just "covered up"???

That would not have changed where the timing mark is
located in relationship to the spark, it still would
need to be adjusted to the correct timing (or close)
to run, and that would be at the mark + static
timing, or at full advance running. The mag will
not turn that far in its slot (IIRC) Jim

There are actually 3 marks in the pulley. Two that are real close together (like 1/4 inch apart) Those are the ones that the mag snaps before by 3/4 of an inch or better. The other is clean around on the other side of the pulley. Kippster

Just a word of caution - and it may be a non issue if you never hand crank but, I wouldn't try hand cranking it till you're sure everything's set right.

Firing a little ahead of tdc can do bad things to the bones in your arms if it kicks back.

Just because it's running ok doesn't mean it wont kick back.
