Belt for Delco 10SI alternator installed on Super M

Picked up a Super M with a "bent hood" alternator conversion.

First order of business is tucking that alternator up under the hood. The belt that came with it is much too long, though.

What size belt works for the typical alternator conversion?

The technique I use is to cut an old v-belt and wrap it around
the pulleys and measure. Take that measurement to parts
house and they'll fix you up.

If the alternator is mounted using the original generator bracket, you can use the original generator belt. IH part number 49341D. That is what my M uses.

If someone mounted the alternator using one of those "universal" alternator mounting brackets, such as mine is, you will need to modify the bracket slightly so the alternator sets on TOP of the bracket. A couple of square nuts and a welder will do it.

Anybody got a picture of an M/Super M conversion using the factory bracket flipped upside-down?

We tried doing that with a Super M several years ago, and it didn't even come close to fitting.

On one of my 400s I welded a small piece of metal to the top of the bracket and drilled another hole in it to attach the alternator to. I already had a belt for it and guesitmated where the hole needed to be to get it tight and miss hitting the hood.

Here are a few pictures of an alternator mounting bracket that I have designed. The bracket has slotted holes where it bolts to the cylinder head making it easy to get the belt correctly aligned with the waterpump pulley. This setup is designed to use a Delco 10SI alternator with the orginal generator belt. The picture of just the mounting brackets is shown on a International 300 but the M, SM, 400, 450 bracket is similar.

My e-mail is open if you are interested in purchasing a set of mounting brackets for $40 or I can also do a complete kit.

The last few Delco SI alternator to IH mounting brackets I built, have vertical 2 inch slots where the bracket bolts to the engine.
This allows adjusting the alternator up / down in addition to right / left. Makes for far more adjustment to compensate for wear.

For an alternator belt, I use Power twist link belts. This stuff wears forever, can be installed without removing the fan belt and is easy to add or remove links to get the right belt length for a custom fit. Most bearings and drives places have it in stock in 10 ft rolls.
