Hard starting H when warmed up.

Thought I had it figured out but having problems when its warmed up. Just won't start. I have a magneto ignition and it starts in one revolution when cold. But if the engines warm it won't start. I put new condenser, points, and plugs on when i redid the ignition this past winter. Any suggestions to help me out? Thanks as always guys.

Have you confirmed spark when it's hot? You could a an intermittent winding opening up from motor heat. Also does it crank pretty fast and easy, sign of low compression. Pull start it in third gear, if it starts it may be engine overhaul time.

Not low compression. I know thats good. It could be valves. I'll check that next week. It starts good when cold. And I'll check spark when hot. That may be an issue. Thanks guys.

Could be the coil in the mag, had a plane that you hand propped, when the mag got hot it just wouldn't start, when it cooled off, fired right up. Turned out that the coil in the mag broke down when hot.

Consider two things. WInter gas in warm conditions can change vaporization and cause difficult starting. (do not leave the fuel on)
Is the mag impulse tripping? if it is 12v it could be turning fast but just beyond the speed to allow impulse.
If it starts when cold, the slower rotation can allow impulse. Jim

When it quits running check for fire to your plugs asap before the engine cools. If there's no fire or weak fire to your plugs your coil is probably getting weak and needs replacing. Hal

Hello Al: How did Mags check on pre-takeoff runup after engine was hot from giving rides to several people. My first aircraft was a J-3 Cub. Sure wish I had that back now. I propped it from behind after watching another pilot prop his J-3 from behind because it was on floats.. Kinda hard to "stand on water" out in front. After doing that several times it seemed a lot safer standing close to the open right side. My left hand could quickly reach the engine controls better. Back to my question: did the bad coil mag check OK pre-takeoff? Thanks.. ag
