Battery hookup ih460

Hey guys; I purchased a IH460 a couple of weeks ago. I guess I'm getting senile???????, but I disconnected the battery cables to clean and chg the battery and did not pay attention which ones were hooked to what, both cables were black. I should have painted red on one. I'm assuming pos. to pos., neg. to neg. Not like some ford 8n's reverse polarity! THANKS LARRY

Do you have the conventional post type batt with clamp cable ends? Would you believe the posts are different sizes? Neg post is smaller. If you just loosened the bolt & wiggled the clamp off without spreading, set a clamp on a post. Neg clamp won't go on the larger pos post, & larger pos clamp will be really sloppy on the smaller neg post. If it fits, it's right, if it doesn't fit, it's wrong.
Of course this doesn't apply if you have the bolt-nut type post on the batt & ring/eyelet end on cable.

Thanks for the replies; I hooked the cables back up, neg to grd., pos. to starter. Started fine and ran it for a while and it started running rough and dying. Looked at the sediment bowl and noticed particles of rust or ???????. Removed the bowl and opened the shut off and fuel just dribbled out, the outlet pipe was clogged too. Runs good now, waiting for the ground to dry some more so I can plow my garden. Larry frm MO.
