H starter trouble

Working on an H, rebuilt starter wont turn the engine over, old starter will. Tried hooking the battery right to the starter, same problem. Is it ok to hook a 12 volt battery right to the starter or am I asking for trouble. 6 volt system.

must be a fault in the starter . 12v wont hurt the starter to try it. also with all these 12volt conversions on these old tractors they keep the 6 volt starter.

If that H didn't turn over with the 6 volt direct to starter then a 12 volt won't do any better. You either have a bad rebuild or installed wrong somwhow.

Sounds like a poor rebuild on that starter. Now if it spins it over with 12 volts and not the 6 then you could also have a ground or cable problem because 12 volts is more forgiving of things like poor grounds and small or bad cables.

How did you hook the battery direct? I had troubles with mine for years until I replaced the old cables that were corroded inside the insulation. It seemed kind of weird that it could happen, but when I peeled back the insulation to put new ends on, all the wire inside was green. I believe I wasted a 12-volt conversion when just new wires could have done the job.
