Super A Steering Question

Getting slop out of steering on my Super A. Of course the key on the shaft to steering gear is worn and has worn the slot. Tell me why I should not have the steering gear welded to shaft on bottom side by a good welder with some of these new rods they claim will hold anything?

Because you or the poor sucker that is the next owner may want to take it apart some day.

Because when you realize that didn't fix all the slop and you want ot change out the bushings too, you're going to REALLY regret it!!!

Seriously - a shim that's put in there well should do the trick very simply. If you want a real fix - build up the faces of the square shaft and mill it down to the right size.

A weld, using any kind of rod, in that tight area is forever. And if it ever had to come out, for go knows what reason, that'd be a real pain in the butt!

Figure that tractor's been around for 60 years. It could be around another 60, and should be treated as such. Once that's welded, the oil seal on that shaft is the last one that tractor will ever see.

my 100 is practically the same as A. Most of the problem was in a bearing on top of the sector shaft. It does not make reason that this bearing would burn up but it will (lack of lubrication). probably should look hard at the steering arm coming from the housing. while someone turns the steering wheel from one side to the other, if the arm moves up and down, the bearing is probably bad.
if so, tear down and replace.
