966 3-speed

I purchased a 966 with 3-speed. I was told it's a 1566 transmission which was put in for loader work because of wider gears. Has anyone ever seen this or heard of this?

The only three speed transmissions I've seen in a 966 is when the countershaft nut comes off and the shaft slides forward allowing 1rst gear to come off the shaft.

The three speed was used in the 1566 but I can't see anyone going to all the trouble to put one in a 9 when a big complaint of the 15 was that it only had three speeds instead of four.

Neighbor had a 1066 that had a 1566 trans (and a 1566 front end) installed. His 10 was turned up quite a bit and run hard sometimes three 8-hr shifts a day, hugh chisel plow & 22 ft disc. That tractor should be in the smithsonian.

I highly doubt it was put in for "loader work."

More likely someone had a good front half from a 966 and a good back half from a 1566, and bolted them together.

Thanks for the response. Glad to hear someone has heard of this. My tractor runs good and no problems.
