1566 injection pump primer

Is there a way a person can re-pack or otherwise repair a leaking self primer on the injector pump? When you pump it, as much comes out around the stem as goes in the unit.

The primer pump screws out and then you can replace seal. You can unscrew knob after getting primer off and replace o-ring and seal. There is a brass gasket inside where primer screws into gear pump.

Great, I was hopeing so. My book makes the statement that "the pump should be serviced by a qualified tech" and doesn't show anything. That primer is about as far as I have the nerve to go into that thing! Thanks!!
