Farmall AV left axle rebuild

AV coming along nicely. Left brake is soaked, left side is noisy, and the previous owner filled the left housing with grease (Maybe it's roofing tar?). There's goop showing at the drain hole in the axle tube and brake rod, so I'm sure the seals are junk.

I want to get in there and replace bearings, brake band and seals before this tractor goes out in the field.

What are likely things I'll find? What's the general procedure for checking it out and rebuilding?

Any advice from you wizards will be appreciated.

Final drive need to have 90wt in the bottom pan. Replace the seal on the final and alos the one on the tranny while its apart. You can clean the brake band with solvent or brake cleaner. While ita apart get the clevis on the brake rod free and clean so you can adjust the band when done. You can buy the gasket or make one out of gasket material for the bottom pan.

You will want to replace the seal in the differential carrier, that will be obvious when you take it apart. What you will find is that new seals are less rugged compared to the old ones and you'll find the final drive shaft worn from the original seal. The trick will be to get your new seal to ride on a portion of the diff. shaft that is not grooved.
