I just bought a remanufactured T/A (with the sprag clutch) for my 350. When we put it in, we got upside down, only two of the bolts would like up. In popping it out, the transmission drive and secondary sun gear came out of the planet carrier. Now we can't get them back together.

I can't see in there, but I think the carrier isn't going into the overrunning clutch. What is the trick for getting it back together ?

Thanks

Greg

I never used the sprag type, only original style ramp and rollers. On them you take the ramp out of the rear housing,(THE FOUR BOLTS), put the ramp on carrier and then install rollers, then set it back into the rear housing. Then put them four bolts back in. Probably a similar procedure for the sprag.

On a sprague, a person might need to tie the little sprague flippers down as they are moved in then remove the string. Sometimes they are nasty. Jim

I was kind of afraid of that.

Are there little pieces that will fly when I pull the 4 bolts and the clutch ramp (or whatever it is called now) ?

Greg

If it is a sprage clutch it should be a one piece unit.I put a sprage out of a 1066 in my 460 TA it was in a self containd cage.

They differ between applications. Some I have seen have retainers made of spring steel. others have had individual coil springs that are dramatically complex. Google images of Sprag clutches. Jim

The sprag clutch looks like a complex self contained unit. It would be interesting to take one apart, but hopefully not this one.

To get the clutch and carrier out I am thinking that I will remove the bolts, tap the carrier around counter clockwise (it locks up when it is turned CW), and push it out with the four bolts from the backside.

It looks a lot like this type

With the ta split in half clamp the topshaft in a vise put the thin tin spacer over the bearing and put the ramp and sprag over the carrier while twisting the sprag counter clockwise to release the shoes. Then make sure ot turns clockwise and locks counter clockwise for proper installation. Next put on the cast iron spacer and then the backgear housing assembly should slide back on. Nothing to it.

Just pry it apart with a screw driver.. any questions feel free to call 515-368-0533. I have built over 3000 old style ta units.
