Mounted Plow on Farmall A without coulter

Hello. I have a mounted two-way plow for my Farmall A. It is all there but the rolling coulters. My question is did some parts of the country not use coulters on there plow. Will it plow OK without them? This was standard equip on the plow wasnt it. THANKS

Mine works good enough without the coulter, but would prefer to have one for more than garden plowing. Leaves a crumbly edge in our sand.

Some soils will till W/O coulters. Most won't turn stubble and organics under very well. Weed stems and corn stalks wrap onto the beams and cause operator irritability. Our plows in clay riddled Northern Indiana were always coulter equipped. Lantz coulters with two blades were common. The second blade was cupped and set to top curl the cut edge of the land over into the furrow. This covered more trash. Others had a corrugated radial crimp causing them to get traction in their cut and turn such that trash was sliced through. I believe that they also make a plow pull easier in most soils. Dry sand would be an exception. Jim

Everybody seems to make a big deal about missing colters. The furrow may be a 'fuzzy' without it,but it will plow fine. Some folks think the shins will wear faster(maybe they will?)But who cares if its only used on a garden and on annual plow day.Around here,95% of plows do not have colters-mine dont.I've owned several plows in my farming career, none of them have had colters.

It depends on your soil. My B-187 came from Cannon City,Co and didnt have the coulters but the bracket was there part of the guage wheel bracket. The other BN-187 came from VT and had them. Seen a lot of plows in COLO when i lived there without them. Husband and Wife each had rollover 4 bottom and plowed the onion fields in the Rocky Ford area. Only seen a few plows in the Gunnision,Pitkin area where we had property for 26 yrs.

Stalks and plant residue is sheared and separated by a coulter. If none is used these fold over the beam and plug the plow. We had a coulter bearing fail on a #8 and fought the trash all day on the bottom W/O the coulter. Jim

They are definitely a plus in sod or picked corn ground.

On silage corn ground where the weeds were kept under control, they're not really necessary. You've only got the short stalks to contend with and they roll right under.

Gene This plow was from Southern Colorado. So guess like you said they didnt use or need the coulters on there plows. It was COMPLETE when I picked it up. Had all the mounting brackets and I even got the Pnuematic cylider with it and a control valve. I think that it will look good restored on my A.

Hello. Any idea were I can get some coulters for my plow? Will any other model IHC coulters fit this plow. It is a A-187. My Dad told me that they did not use them back in Ohio were he grew up
