Farmall C Hand Bumper

I just figgured after reading the posts about me bumping my hand several times changing gears that I was probly a slow learner. I backed up to the disc a little bit ago and bumped the sore spot leaning back looking at the end of the drawbar and went from reverse to first and bumped the same spot again. Being a slow learner I didn't bother to check the distance between the cage and the shifter knob. Heck those that have been using the C for 40 years and not know what I was talking about means I must be doing something wrong. While feeling sorry for myself and looking to see if I could see red blood I looked real close to the distance between the two places. I really don't have fat hands and yet when I lay my hand on the knob it looked like less that 1/4" gap. This Farmall C tractor being my only Farmall other than the 10-29 and only having the C 9 years up until then I figured I was a green Farmall operator so I decided to take a picture and post what I have.

I probly need a new knob, or a thinner hand. :)^D

Maybe you could grab the lever on the shaft below the knob? It would be awkward but it looks like it could be safer.

I wonder if the knob is sitting too high because there is some of that "shim" tape that is keeping the knob from falling off is wrapped too high and the knob just isn't down all the way.

Is the light bar square to the centerline of tractor, that is I would loosen the mounting bolts and twist it to the right a bit & retighten. I agree that shift knob is too high also.
If AFTER removing all the tape & replacing that gearshift knob and it still sits that high, I would either drill out the new knob a 1/2 inch or so, or remove some of the length of the gearshift lever, or maybe even both.
It may need to heated & bent towards the rear enough to provide clearance in the foward position without hitting anything when moved in the rear position.

Dick, That picture shows exactly what I was telling you about yesterday. There is no way that the quadrant should be that close to the shifter. Loosen up the bolts that hold it in place, and rotate it foreward until the rear of it is at about 15 degrees from vertical. When you do that, you'll probably have to re- adjust the touch control linkage so it all works correctly. Wish I had a picture to show you.

Andy is exactly correct. That whole quadrant is rotated back towards the operator. I just went out and took pictures of my Super C.

Thanks for the pictures Mark. I guess that my 15 degree comment is a little off, but he should be able to get it right from your pictures. -Andy

Thanks for the pictures and the helpful comments.

I will get that changed as soon as I get around to it. Now if I could figure out how to get the seat to not go to the bottom when I set on it. I probly won't like the fix to that. :)^D

Random thoughts here, haven't driven a SC since 1965.
IIRC, just the way my arm naturally twisted, I grabbed the shifter low on the knob with thumb & pointer finger at bottom, pinkie toward the top. Just like some people grab the shifter on car or p-up with hand on top, fingers curved down, others with hand under, fingers curved up.
Also looking at Mark's photo, it seems that the quadrant maybe should be rotated forward a bit. Rear edge in line with other hyd lever, front & rear angles of quadrant equal instead of one verticle & other at a greater angle.
I have been wrong before & will be wrong many times in the future.
