I had my comutator turned down and the groves are no longer there, Will that cause it to short out on the brush surface when starter is engaged

We used to use a broken hacksaw blade to cut the groves in an armature when it had been turned down.
best to put a shop rag on it and lightly clamp in a vise. good luck to you.

A Dremel tool with the apropriate cutting wheel works good also.(I have done both this and hacksaw blade method)

Some on here will tell you that you dont have to clean those grooves, but I am telling you DO IT!!!! ;)

Do not undercut the mica on the starter armature. The brushes used in the starter have a high copper content and are hard enough to wear down the mica as the commutator wears. If you undercut the mica the material worn off the brushes can fill in the grooves and short out the armature.

Generators are just the opposite. on those the mica must be undercut because the brush material is mostly carbon and is too soft to wear down the mica. This will cause the brushes to lose contact with the commutator and arc which causes poor contact with the rest of the commutator.
