Pyrometer probe/sencer location.

Where is the correct location ,before the turbo or after the turbo? The 706(310) has the probe before the turbo. It also has manifold boost pressure gauge.During normal farming operations,it runs between 1000 and 1100 degrees and between 10 15 lbs boost.sometimes on the 'tough spots',the temp will go over 1300 and 20 lbs boost.I shift down(TA)when this happens. Is this too hot?Its been that way for 20+ years. If the temp probe was after the turbo, would the temp read lower?Does the probe placement reall matter?

Locating the probe on the inlet side of the turbo gives you the most useful data. After all it's the exhaust turbine inlet temperature you want to limit so it does not damage the turbine.

Temperature on the outlet side of the turbine will always be lower than the inlet. So it cannot directly indicate what's happening at the hottest part of the turbine.

Therefore locating the probe on the inlet side is preferred. HOWEVER should a probe there break off, it will be ingested into the turbine with disastrous consequences. But if a probe breaks on the outlet side of the turbine it will simply be blown out the stack, leaving the turbine intact.

The 1300 is really pushing it to the max and even running it at 1000-1100 is a weee bit high . It would be in your best interest to turn down the wick a bit and keep her in the 850-1000 range with the probe on the hot side . with probe on the HOT side there is always a chance that it may burn off and go thru the hair dryer . Also check the pump timing .

Turn that fuel screw down. Too hot for good life of the engine , turbo, manifolds, the whole tractor. Sure, some take it but they are normally just using the max for very short periods. Makes good parts sales and service though.

So your liking peaks of 10-1100 and running at 8-900? I suppose a tractor runs a little different than a pickup. I push my pickup more, but it gets a lot of chances to cool off when going down hills or stop signs etc.

I have a question where is the best place to install a probe at I have a 856 with a turbo and no probe it gets worked hard and don't want to burn it up. Where is the best place to get a gauge at also sorry to jump in on post thanks
