F30 Front Wheel seal

I need some help from the experts please! I am changing the front wheels on my F30 from cutoff steel to the cast center and demountable rims which have the same bearings/races but have a different (smaller)hub ID for the seal and felt washer. My problem is that I dont know which seal & retainer to replace it with or where I can get them. Ideas?

sounds like youhave F-20 wheels, they will work, just measure the hub ID and the spindle OD where the seal needs to go and take those measurements to your local NAPA etc and they should be able to fix you up with a seal that will work.

with all due respect, F20 cast wheels will NOT work on an F30. The hubs are different sizes, with the F30 being bigger.

Fordson house and Rice Equipment have bearings and seals, but be prepared for sticker shock. If I remember correctly, there are some older posts with the cross-over numbers for the F30 front bearings.

the F-30 uses different bearings, but the hub is the same size in the bearing area, the area where the seal rides is bigger diameter in a F30 hub, however if you take the felt seal off the hub and get a seal, you can use F20 wheels on F30 and vise versa, I've done it.

Thanks for the replies. Just for the record, the bearings from the F30 hubs fit perfectly in the F20 wheel races. They also are the correct distance apart when in the F20 wheel and fit up fine on the F30 spindle. The only issue is just the inner seal which originally appears to be a combination of felt and steel ring with leather and is larger on an F30. I will do as suggested and see if I can find a modern seal that matches ID for the spindle (F30) and OD that matches for the hub (F20). Thanks again guys.

F-30 and F-20 rims are completely interchangeable except the thickness of the felt dust seal. ive swapped many of these wheels around before with no problems. have a friend who has a regular with F-30 front steel on it, now that looks funny

You can put F-30 front wheels on a F-20 with out modification, other than getting your caliper out and measuring for a lip seal. When you put cast F-20 wheels on a F-30 you have to chamfer the inner hub because it will hit the back of the spindle. Then you will have to measure for a seal. If I can find the seal box I will give you the number. I know this because I just did it. There may be other ways to do it but this way worked best. The F-30 bearings do fit the F-20 outer races. Guys, I have been wrong before, and when I am, I have zero issue saying it out loud, and in public. However, here is what I am struggling with. I have a set of F&H fronts that I bought from a guy that said they were for an F-30. Well, I got 'em home, and they did NOT fit. Hub was too small. I now have them on the front of my Regular while the steels are getting sand blasted, painted, etc.

so, I am happy to admit I am wrong, but what up with my F&H fronts?!?!?!?

probably for a JD A or something. my neighbor is a deere guy and he said once how they looked very very similar

SB,
Having the seal # would be great!
So if you use a lip seal, it must go on the spindle before the inr bearing....how are you then "pressing" the seal into the hub as it goes on the spindle? I can see getting one side on using a long punch with the opposite wheel off but what about doing the second one? Thanks much for all the replies guys. I have been wanting to do this swap for awhile and couldnt find much info.....shoulda known I would find it here!

You will put the prepacked bearing into the hub first and then press your seal in with a seal driver, exactly like you would for your car, pickup, etc. You have to watch your depth so it will not hit the back side of the spindle, basically a little further than your chamfer. The lip will then ride on the spindle much like your car. Make sure you polish the spindle with emery cloth so it does not damage the seal lip. I am out of town this week for training so I will look for the boxes or receipts when I return Saturday.

If you are in a hurry, I am almost positive this is the number for the seal, National or Timken #226840. Found it looking through past orders.

There is nothing wrong with your response. If it did actually fit you would not have to modify the part to fit. It just comes down to if you can make it fit. It will never be correct, it just works. I wish I did not have to go this route but you got to do what you got to do. Just keeping the old iron rollin".

OK, well that is what I am used to doing but I had to use a bearing seperator and puller to get the inner bearing off. Even after I polished the spindle the bearing has to be driven on which is why I made the comments I did. This fit works fine for the original set up as the seal is fit over the spindle, then the bearing and finially the hub. I guess I will need to keep working the spindle until I get a nice snug slip fit to the inner bearing. The seal lip size looks to be 1.75" (spindle OD) and the hub ID is 3.75". Thanks again for all your help.

I had the same thing happen on both my 20 and 30. It is good they fit a little snug but, to have to press them on and off is a little much. My spindles were all a little out of round but well with in the tolerance for a lip seal. Have fun.
