400 LP questions.

I am thinking about looking at a 400LP w/ fast hitch and it looks in good shape. New T/A but needs some work on the engine and has rears with little tread. My question, how do you fill an LP tank? I have never been around them nor do we use propane at my house. We do live in the Marcella's shale boom area, so can you use natural gas? These might be dumb questions but I haven't a clue on any of it. Thanks all.

Procedure varies form unit to unit and what you're local authorities will allow. At worse you'll have to get your LP tank set up with a pump and vapor return line. With that set up you hook two hoses from the tank to the tractor open the valves on the tank and tractor and turn you pump on pumping liquid propane into the tank and allowing gas/vapor back. Everything on the tank needs to be explosion proof wiring. I have used other systems where we vented the vapor return to the air but I don't know if that is allowed any more. No you can't use natural gas, it won't liquefy, your propane system won't handle CNG and you'd need a compressor to to increase the natural gas to a usable pressure. The tractor pulls liquid propane out of the tank through a heat exchanger that turns it into gas that mixes with the air at the carburetor.

ive got an 806LP and a 450LP and i fill them right from a 500 gallon tank next to my building. i have a hose thats hooked to the LIQUID line of the main tank with the other end having the adapter to screw right on to the LP tank on the tractor. If its a sunny day and the big tank is hot from sitting in the sun and the tractor is inside or in the shade, i can fill it without venting it at all and i dont have a pump. takes about 2 minutes to do. pretty easy.

your local fuel guy should have all the parts you need. my transer hose and valves were about 70 bux

Without a propane tank at home to fill from you can either have the delivery truck stop by your house and fill it when needed (if they're cooperative and generally they are) or you'll have to take the tractor in to get it filled.

If you're doing light duty or parade type work a full tank will last a long time. If it runs out you can hook up your BBQ tank!
