656 Hydro utility diesel won't start

I picked up a nice little tractor but could not get it started. I could get it to hit occasionally on ether but it seems it is not getting fuel. Who knows how old the diesel is. The owner said he quit using it when it just became too much of a bear to start even though he had replaced the glow plugs. Hour meter shows 8000+ hours, but tractor doesn't really show much wear in the normal places. I can get fuel to the pump. When I tried to bleed the lines at the injectors, most of the steel lines tried to turn with the flare nuts so I quit. All the glow plugs get about 10 volts when energized. I thought it might should have been more. I was using a hot battery out of my truck try to start it, but no luck. I finally just through the sheetmetal in the truck and winched it on the trailer. Where should I start? Seems to me I read a thread once about changing the injector timing a bit one way or the other to make it easier to start. What about that trans cooler someone made? Kinda wished I knew an older IH mechanic that was familiar with the D282 around here to take it to. Thanks in advance for all your replies!

Just don't try to pull start you will destroy the Hydro. The starting problem could be one of a number of things. I would not use the glo plugs untill I got good smoke coming out the exhaust. Problem could be blocked fuel return to tank, deliver valve which is in the pump, charge pump.

Until you can determine that you're getting fuel to the injectors, you're no where, so that's where to start. Maybe you loosen the lines at the pump for starters and see if the pump is actually pumping. If you have fuel there, then you're going to have to go after those stubborn nuts. When you know you have high pressure fuel at the injector you then have a chance.

I bought a 656 hydro high crop with a story just like yours. I replaced the glow plugs and it still took forever to start. I pulled the pump and had it checked. The man said it needed rebuilding. Put it back on and it starts great.

If tractor has not run for awhile pump may have some internal valves and plungers stuck, will need resealed to get working again. Remove all glow plugs, crank as if starting, if air-fuel mist is out of each cyl pump is working. No fuel mist pump needs work. If you like call 574 893 4172 after 7 pm IN time, can reseal pump if needed.
