MD Ring End Gap

I should have been more clear. I am wanting to know what would be acceptable ring end gap on a farmall MD engine? Thanks

(quoted from post at 16:38:06 03/17/12) .016 gap. This equals .004" per inch of bore. Jim

Is that standard for every internal combustion engine or IH only or letter series only or ???

That is what I thought. I just lightly hone cylinder #1 and have a end gap of over .035. I would bet that woul dnot be real good for a diesel with higher compression. What does it take to pull the sleeves on this engine? I have done them on a Super C but those were wet sleeves.
Thanks

My service manual gives the specifications for ring end gap as .012-.028 inch. It also says the maximum permissible end gap before replacing is .070 on compression rings and .060 on oil rings.

They are easy to pull. They are not easy to afford or find. These old diesels are actually really tolerant of crappy conditions. Not like a new 6.7 diesel.

Does anyone one know if using oversized rings is a possibility?

Does anyone know if using oversized rings is an option? I am kind of torn as it looks like I can do sleeves and rings for ~$800 bot over $2200 for a complete kit. I just wanted to get this old girl running just to provie I could. Now is the time to do anything major. I have had the head gasket for a couple of months and thought I might want to clean up the cylinders a bit. Sorry if this is a dumplicate post.

If you check the ring gap at the bottom 1/2 inch and it is 16 or so, your engine has enough taper in the sleeve to require being rebuilt. Over sized rings are probably very difficult to find unless found for a different engine with the same ring dimensions and that is a probable find.
If your piston to wall clearance is in spec. and the ring gap from max wear near the top, to little wear at the bottom is less than 15 to 20 thousandths I would run it with the rings you have. 35 will be OK if the taper is less than 10 thousandths, but it will not be a fresh engine, It will run however.
