yet one more A oil seal question

Hi guys - I've been asking a few questions concerning dismantling the rear end of my A to change oil seals and have one more question. I have the whole right side apart except removing the final drive from the housing. I have all the bolts out on both ends. Should I be able to drive the shaft from the inside bearing to get the assembly out? I know once out I'll have to have the outside bearing pressed off and can get that done at work. I can't get the inside one to come out of the bearing. Any tricks or am I missing something?

On the right side drivers side you need to remove the final drive to replace that seal in the final. You need to remove the diff housing then you can remove the brake drum then the diff shaft will come out thru the plate on the final next to the wheel but you need to remove the brake drum so the shaft will come out thru that hole no need to remove the bearing. When the shaft is removed then you can replace the seal in the final. Getting the brake drum can be a problem but it does need to be removed so the diff shaft can be removed thru the final. You will need to replace the seal in the tranny while its apart as it probably is leaking also.

Gene - maybe I called the shaft I have the problem with the wrong name - its the shaft the wheel ends up attached to. I managed to get the shaft with the brake drum apart.

If you removed the retaining bolt that is behind the plate on the inside of the final drive (the side opposite the wheel) and you have removed the four bolts that hold the felt washer and oil seal next to the wheel. The whole assembly should slide out, with plenty of persuasion.

The one where the wheel fastens to is the axle the long upper shaft is the diff shaft. I havent had anyproblems removing the axle shaft and bearings
