Two Cosmetic Questions About 656s

A friend of mine recently purchased a "66 Farmall 656 at an auction (s/n correct). It is a wife front, diesel, w/ pto & hyd, no 2/3pt, just the horseshoe drawbar support and drawbar like on an H/M. The serial tag shows McCormick Farmall, as do the side tins, not International. My two cosmetic questions are about the grill/grill screen and the make and model designation tins.

First, I have seen 656s with a white grill screen but this unit has a bar grill like what you would see on a bigger 56 series machine. Is this tractor supposed to have a white grill screen or the bar grill?

Secondly, the horizontal tins are painted white reading McCormick Farmall and the verical tin is painted white as well with the model number at the bottom as usual. My question is this the correct paint sceme for this machine? Do "International" branded tractors only have the white horizontal and then the model number on red?

Thank you for your time.

The early 656 used a screen grill(like a 706)the later 656 used the 'tube'grill.has the tractor been repainted?I think the color scheme is correct.

I think with the tubing grill, the vertical trim is supposed to be red.
When the horizontal strip runs all the way to the grill that seems to be the norm.

Just looked at "150 years of IH" by C.H.Wendel.acordingly,the early screen grill had the verticle stripe all white(like a 706),the tube grill had the verticle stripe red(like a*56 tractor). What you have is an early('66) tractor that has had its grill changed. After all, that tractor is "pushing 50"(years of age),lots of things could have been changed.

The original owner (my friend is now 2nd owner) had the machine painted like a 1206 (white rear rim inserts, front rims, cast grill housing), which we both know is incorrect. Other than those pieces, the tractor has not been repainted at all. Interestingly enough, there is a lot of yellow showing through on the rear end housing. We don't know if that is the cast color coming through or what. The part number is correct from what the parts book shows and the date codes on the rear end housing and axle tubes are L (1966), although the bell housing has an 1-6-M date code (1967).

This is correct also the white grill 656s are Farmalls and the later tube grill models are internationals. The 656 was a very popular 4 bottom tractor that ih kept in production for a long time. The cosmetic changes were made to match the 56 line when 06 production was tended.
