Started chisel plowing last night with our new 966. Used a 7 shank Kewanee chisel.Only 1/3 of the field was dry enough, but it is only March in central Illinois. This was the first hard pull on the 966, and it worked great. Found out quickly that one wrong move on the hydralic lever and the plow would draw 36 inches into the ground to the frame in about 1/2 a second. 10 inches in the ground seemed to be the happy spot for the plow and tractor. I cant wait til the rest of the field dries. 79 degrees today in March???? Unheard of
On a hard pull what RPM should you set the throttle at for optimal HP and feul economy Diesel isnt cheap

On a hard pull, such as you are doing, pull the throttle handle all the way to the stop. Let that engine run wide open. That is where the optimum horsepower AND efficiency is.

YEa ya can run her wide open BUT you will find that running her at PTO speed will give ya what your looking for and let her work max power is at rated PTO speed not max RPM.

craigreavley, I pull a 13 shank chisel here, about 8 to 9in and usually run my 966 all out. Balls to the Wall! But I do a lot of Chore work with mine from time to time, It has a loader on it.
But what has helped as much as anything is the Duals I acquired awhile back. I the see the Hubs on your tractor, Go get the Duals mounted up, the traction / performance will be tons better.
You also mentioned using the lift lever to set the depth of your chisel. If at all possible use the gauge wheels to set the depth not the tractor you will be miles ahead then, the "Load&Depth" will only kick in the tight spots. Hope this helps.

I agree with everything you said.
I owned an 856 many years ago and pulled a 13 shank chisel. With duals installed, that 856 pulled the chisel easily. Without the duals, I could do little more than scratch the surface.

Rusty, Thanks, Since I do a lot more choreing than actual plowing these days, My 414 will go to slobbering oil after a while, but a little bit of plowing and havering her scream at the top of her lungs will stop "That", in short order!
That slobbering characteristic is the one thing I really don't like about my tractor.
I have found an old, 1966, 656 LP, Plan on using if for my light work with, hope to go get it in a few days. It has been setting up for 3 yrs, since the owner Passed.
Thanks again, Hope all is well !

Keep it at PTO speed or above. No need to be screaming along at 2600 during lightly-loaded times, but lugging it isn't good for efficiency either.

Maybe not a problem since you don't have a turbo, but if we let the 1066 lug too much it gets hot.

I have a 9 shank glencoe at 12 inches deep and it takes a JD 8400 to pull it 7-8 mph. How fast are you pulling it and how wide of shanks?

I was standing there when they sold that tractor and it was one of the nicest looking 9's I've seen in awhile. You've got a good one.
While your plowing just run it wide open you'll be fine.

Stuart, My 966 is a factory Non-Turbo tractor. I usually pull in Lo-4 or 3, TA in Hi Direct(forward) on the straights, pull the TA into Lo (back) on the turns. My old girl runs about 2200 to 2300 RPMs @ High Idle, tops! I can't imagine an engine turning 2600 at all.
My chisel is a very heavy, 13 shank, Graham-Hoeme, 3 bar style, 4x4 box beams, with double spring resets, the chisel points are standard, 2 in wide straight points w/ 2 or 3 mounting holes that you can find at most any Tillage Supply House. With 2 gauge wheels!
We have rock-ledge in spots, You wouldn't run that fast in my fields and expect to keep that chisel plow together very long. You might be able to do that in spots, but about the time you get lax with it all, is when all h3ll breaks loose when you hang a ledge and crap starts to breaking , twisting, and going South!
? Stuart,,, @ 7 or 8 mph are you plowing or trying to build a new terrace??? LOL I had to ask. Does seam fast to me!
Anyway hope this answers your ?s.
