I need some copper bolt washers and oil filter gaskets for my Farmall Tractors. Does anyone know of a reasonable source for these parts? The site that I found ( Messicks ) wants almost $6 per item which seems ridiculous to me. Thanks

The gaskets are SUPPOSED to be included with the filter. If they are not, find a different place to buy the filters. $6 for the copper washer is not unreasonable when you consider that everyone who touches it needs to make a small profit, and more than likely Messick's isn't making much more than one dollar on it.

I need to remove filter cannister to replace gasket on push rod cover.I don"t need to change filter changed it last fall(poor planing). Can I reuse gasket.

I'd guess that about ten engine oil filter gaskets can be had from your local NAPA store for about the same price of what one will set you back at your local CIH dealer. They usually don't stock them, though. IIRC, the NAPA number for the gasket for the narrow (both short and tall) letter and number series oil filters is 5070 and the gasket number for the wider filters for the diesels (and some gas engine tractors) is 5074, but double check. Wix and Fleetguard filter companies offer the gaskets seperately, too.

It never hurts to have an extra gasket or two around. Some (especially the twisted up mess of a gasket that comes with the 1-piece paper hyd. filter for -60 series tractors and more) are sometimes damaged in the package, and I've torn more than one filter gasket/seal while installing filters. Some brands of filters don't come with the gaskets, period.

An suitable washer for the oil filter canister can probably be sourced at a local auto parts or hardware store as well.

Yes you may use the rubber gasket again. The only time that I put in a new one is when the old one won't seal any more. I can usualy get at least 10 oil and filter changes out of a gasket.

The washer/seal is pn. 13727D. In 2001, suggested retail was $2. Dealer cost for that item was half of that, or $1. You're correct on the dollar profit, but likely a decade off of when the dealer was making it. Today, a dealer has it listed for $5.64. I'm not aware of the current markup on that item, but I'd guess it's about the same it was a decade ago. That would mean the dealer probably paid between $2.50 and $3.00 for that washer depending on their chosen markup.

In 2001, the gasket, pn. 13728D retailed for $2.64. Dealer paid 55% of that amount. Today, a dealer has it listed for $6.35. Again, do the math.

I agree that many parts suffer from "too many middlemen" syndrome. I don't know if these can be included in that category or not. I do know today I can buy a NAPA gasket at retail for this application for around fifty cents and they are just as good as any CIH one I've ever used. Maybe CIH could source them from NAPA or WIX for their "Gold Value" line of parts?

I may have been a decade or so off, but even if a dealer makes 3 dollars above cost, he has just barely paid the costs associated with printing out an invoice.

I think the "gold value" line of parts is sourced from Tisco. Tisco already handles the "Baldwin" brand of oil filters, and the gaskets ARE included with the filters.

I beleive the bolt size is 3/8, tell your parts man you need a 3/8 copper crush washer, they go by bolt size.
Available from 1/4 up to as large as a oil drain plug.
Usually run around a dollar.

And for some more thoughts about the dealers, in '01 the book says they had to buy both the gaskets and washers in quantities of five. At that time, the gasket was listed as non-returnable to CIH. Anything less than full package quantity of five of the washers probably would not be returnable to CIH, either. I can't say if those quantities are still in place or if the gasket is still non-returnable. Even if both are true, it's still not the fault of the customer that CIH makes the dealer buy 5 of an item and makes them offer them for sale individually and potentially won't let them return parts the dealer orders. That's really between CIH and the dealer.
