F-12 rear main felt seal question

I just love cleaning up old castings on these tractors!! Always amazes me at the tooling that was used to make the moldings and the quality of work that came of it.

First off can anyone give me some tips on what to do so I can have the best seal possible when I'm done. The gaskets I have that will separate the two halves of the seal housings and will of course keep both halves of the felt from touching. Is this correct or should I cut away some of the gasket so the two felt seals are "crushed" against each other?

I would trim the gasket back so the ends of the felt butt together. you're not going to need 'crush', as the felt will swell a little when you soak it. Do not install dry, that I'm sure of. I think that if the felt ends were separated, the oil would pass between the crankshaft and the edge of the gasket.
