I am looking to build a bale spear for moving small rounds. It is a FarmHand convertable trip bucket on my SH. I am sure some of you guys have tried or done this too? Looking for good ideas. I know it will create alot of pressure on the trip pin, and so I thought I would add a safety strap or chain in case she trips with a bale on. I want something that goes on and off easy without much effort so the bucket and still be usefull for other tasks.Ideas gentlemen ? Thanks

Why not do it right: convert to a hyd. bucket with a hyd. operated grapple? Doing it this way is the safest and most efficent way as everthing can be controled from the tractor seat and the grapple should prevent the bale from rolling down the loader arms to the drivers seat. BE SAFE and enjoy! Armand

Seeing that picture makes me think of the man in our church who has been confined to a wheelchair for many years. He was hauling a bale like that and raised the arms a little too far. The bale rolled off the back of the bucket and down the arms right on top of him.

Use an ordinary 3-point bale spear. Remove one lower link pin and turn it around so they're both pointing in the same direction. On the floor of the bucket, weld two straps with 1" holes in them, the holes high enough to slip the spear assembly into easily. I can't see the top of the bucket very well, so you will have to put the spear assem. in place, swing it upward, tight against the bucket, and determine if you want to weld a rigid third eye near the top of the bucket, or chain the top up there somehow. It will depend on what else you use the machine for, and can you spare the room. On my 4500, I did this on a general purpose bucket, and the third eye simply hung down from the "ceiling" of the bucket, out of the way.

Thank you, that sounds do-able. A third eye-let for top link wouldn t be in the way, so that should work out ok. I will post pics when I get it done ! By the way, I never stack bales with this rig, only move them around or dump em in a low feeder, so no worries about the bale rolling down the arms and crushing me. I have been farming my whole life in one fashion or another, and have had my "close calls", I am suprsingly cautious the older I get !! lol

Thanks Armand. I like your idea, but thats not in the budget for me. The grapple would be in my way for other tasks also. I will be safe and enjoy, thanks !!
