Trany Problems on a M

I have a 1945 Farmall M that i have been working on trying to get going but the transmission acts like it wants to go into 1st, 2nd, 5th ans reverse but cant fins the spots for 3rd and 4th gear. hope i can fix this without taking off the transmission cover on the tractor. any help appreciated.

have you removed the gear shift and see how the rails shift manually?

No i haven't because someones whacked a bolt in there a jammed it it was like that when a got it

I'd try to put a pin punch on the tip of the bolt and whack it back out again. Someday you'll want to have it out anyway, probably.

Depending on if the head is still on the bolt and if it is in from the right that is probably the real problem. The lever can't move to the correct position for the rest of the gears.

That whacked in bolt may be the problem in and of itself. The pivot should be correct and (there is a Kit) smooth. The fact that it will go into fifth 1st, and second seems strange.
