cracked housing on an M

I have a Farmall M with the crack in the bottom of the rear end housing. I've found a good rear housing and I'm going to switch out the bad for the good. My question is can I split the tractor between the rear housing and the clutch housing or does it have to split the normal way. I didn't want to remove all the hydraulics if I didn't have to. Thanks Larry

removing the hyd. is a small deal. this is a big job. if you are not experienced in setting the differential back up again and measuring everything before dissassembly, then the easiest way is to just get a good welder on that job and life will be easier. no reason a crack cant be welded. have a welder look at it.
unless your talking complete housing with gears included?

agreed have it welded or stitched and pinned together, much easier then switching everything.

The housing I'm getting is complete with gears. All I'm doing is switching housings. The rear that I'm removing has already been repaired but I'm thinking for best value of tractor it's best to replace with a good one. Larry

Have removed them with the clutch housing left on the engine but dropped the liftall unit out to remove the 4 bolts and 2 dowel pins inside bolting housings together along with 2 bolts on the outside. If careful to keep things lined up the clutch shaft can be removed with the transmissin.
