Today I looked at and test drove a local farmers 706 he has for sale in southern Minnesota. The details of the tractor are as follows: gas engine, narrow front, 3pt, 18.4 rear tires-40%, flat top fenders, 8900+ hrs, 56 style shifter, a wiggly tilt steering, and the pto was gone through. The serial number is 32551. The sheet metal looks amazing. This farmer is the second owner and really didn't put the tractor to hard/heavy use for the 16 years he has had it. It has run his feedmill the past 3 years or so. I was hoping to solicite you guys for advice on the tractor. The clutch has some play in it. I looked over the clutch linkage and in my non-expert opinion it seemed that the clutch needed to be adjusted. While I was driving it I was engaging the TA and noticed that the TA was slow to engage/disengage but didn't notice any issues/sounds/problems with it. Maybe just needs to be adjusted?
The advice I am looking for help on is: what's this tractor worth? Should I be concerned about the clutch or the TA? Does this tractor have a short frame or the long frame? What other areas or items should I be looking at or testing to see if this is a sound tractor to buy?

Couple of things. The tilt steering was not yet available on an'06 tractor. That is a'56 option(some one added it,same as the '56 shifters). The (hydraulic) TA is not adjustable.the fact that it is slow to shift means it is failing.Shift it HARD!,like your pi$$ed!.to shift a TA slow is the worst thing, that will dramaticly shorten it's life.8900 is a lot of hours. There is no "long frame/short frame ,they are the same. This tractor will probably cost you a lot of money in the near future.Run!!

The 706 was made from late 63 to early67.Your tractor is probably a 66 model(my 706,sn:44xxx is a '67)The 706 became the 756 in late 67.There were 4 different engines used in the 706:C263,D282,C291,D310.The tilt wheels were all"wiggly",even when new.The 06/56 tractors all had a LOT of interchangable parts.Close to 50,000 706 tractors were built.

Delta Red, maybe using the term "slow" may not have been the best description of the TA. When I would move the stick forward or backward, there seemed to be a pause of when the TA engaged/disengaged. The way I will describe that is. The TA would engage/disengage at the last 1/4 of the last distance the TA stick travels. I usually pull the TA stick briskly. I am ONLY comparing it to the TA on my dad's 656 where when you move the stick forward/backward there is almost immediate engagment/disengagment of the TA. My dad and I adjusted that one last summer as well as the clutch, which greatly improved the performance. So, maybe it is not correct to compare the two tractors in that way. Thoughts?

The 656 uses the older mechanical TA.The external lickage is adjustable. The 706 and newer/bigger use the hydralic TA.It is not adjustable. The hesitation means the sprags are worn and the ta is worn out.You can delay the inevitable by simply not shifting the Ta.Remove the handleTo prevent "unauthorized" shifting

656 and 706 are two totally differnt tractors.like comparing apples to oranges.better to compare 706 to 806.

That is normal for a hydraulic TA. If it does not freewheel in TA reduction, and if it holds when starting in TA in road gear, it is probably OK. If the tractor is not smoking, and the brakes work well and steering is reasonably tight with ease of turning, I would think it is worth 4 to 5K. If it has been rebuilt, a bit more. The tires are only an issue if you do tillage in wet conditions, or they are cracked and will need to be replaced. They are pricy and that should be considered. Jim

They also used the long frame on the gasoline engine when they made the change and it would be the C-291. If a TA is slow to respond when shifting ahead to direct drive it is worn high clutch pack or low volume of oil due to leakage. Proper use of gauges will show which is problem. It should not free wheel when down shifting and take a hold with no slowing of tractor below the normal speed of low side. There are some double hydraulic clutch TA's out there that do have a neutral between speeds even when working normally. I doubt it would be in a 706 but it could have been put in . They usually attach a sticker to show it has that type. Hy-Capacity sold them some years ago.
