460 only running with choke full on

460 training

Bought 460 last summer. When I got it home, found it would start sputtering and die when worked, or throttle cracked open. Usually pulling the choke would save it. Checked fuel supply - good flow. Checked for air leaks - none found. Checked spark, intermittent - replaced coil and found resistor bad - replaced both and started running/responding good, but I really did not work it after that. Today I started using it to harrow, about 10 min in the problem seems to have returned. Now it will only run with choke on. I will go back through but am looking for other suggestions. Also this tractor has 560 engine (263 CI). Is it possible that it still has the 460 carb and not getting enough fuel? Are the carbs diff 460/560? Thanks in advance.

I do not know anything about 460 or 560 gas, though I have 460D. I had a 544 gas when it was delivered it ran like that. The plastic ventura in the carb was upside down.

Running after sitting is a ssource of flakes and rust in the gas tank getting into the sediment bowl intake and possibly the carb. If it continues to run with the choke out (poorly) the problem is in the carb main meetering system. it will need to be cleaned out. Don't use a in line filter unless it is designed for gravity flow. Most of the time when you have to use the choke to keep the engine running is because of a gas flow restriction somewhere. The engine is probably not getting enough gas.
Vacuum leaks can also be the problem. Bad gaskets and shaft seals.

Look behind the tube fitting where your gas line connects for a screen. It may be plugged with dirt or rust. If that carburetor has a solenoid
on the carburetor it may not be opening fully. If it has a main jet adjusting scr/w you need to open that to enrich the fuel mixture. If none of this helps you probably need to clean the carburetor by soaking in carb cleaner and blowing out the jets with air pressure. Check your float level to make sure it's set high enough. When you need to keep an engine choked is a sign the engine is starving for fuel. Hal

Had a similiar problem with our 460 a couple years back. Found the problem to be a couple loose manifold studs.

I purchased a 460 a couple of weeks ago. Ran good when I picked it up. Drove it yesterday, warmed the engine up good got off and let it sit idling for a few and it died and I started it a few times again and then I started to try to drive it and it sputtered but was able to get it in the shed. Don't know how old the gas is, but I put some stabil in the tank. Noticed some gas leaking from the bottom of the carb where there is a half inch circular hole, looks like where a screw would fit in, but does not have a phillips or flat head screw. Any help would be appreciated. THANKS LARRY

Drain from overflow. It has a screen in it 9or felt) fuel from there means the float is not closing the needle all the way, or there is trash in the needle/seat. Jim

ldb, next time start a new thread. You'll get better answers over hijacking someone else's thread.

99% of the time when you get problems like this the issue can be solved by taking apart and cleaning the carburetor then checking fuel flow.

BTW, Sta-Bil does NOT "fix" bad gas. Once gas is bad, it's bad. All you've done is waste some perfectly good Sta-Bil. If the gas doesn't smell bad, it should be okay, though.
