Sad H story - Rockford CL - Maybe it involves one of you???

I called on an H on CL that had been on less than an hour. The ad said new 12.4x38 Firestones, belly mower, and ran just fine. He bought a Kubota to replace it and that is the only reason it is leaving. I told the guy I would come down and look at it. I asked if he would take a check since I don't keep a grand laying around the house and the banks are closed. He said he would check with his dad. He got back to me after a short while and somebody more local than me went and bought it. I assume he had cash...
Turns out the tractor was the last one made in 1942! Sucks for me, good for the other guy. I thought the tractor would have been a good deal without a special serial number. The owners son (who I dealt with) said it "went to a collector who was going to take it to shows" maybe it is a YTer? I'm all depressed and I tought talking about it might make me feel better.

Edit - Sorry...lots of typos. Must have been all my tears. In hindsight I should have just headed down with the trailer and some cash. I could have written a check for the remainder or I could have let him hold the cash until I paid in full on Monday.

ohh yaa, have had this happen a few times already. you give them your word and then before you get there they sell it out from under you. it does make a person upset though. at least ph. and say i have a guy coming do you still want it? most are real good they give you a fair chance, and say your next in line. ya, its like who do you trust. and when i give my word i stick to it.

I had that a couple of years ago with an H motor from someone on this bourd that was about 45 mins away. I set up a time and got almost there and called like I was supposed to and it some how got sold. Lets just say I was more then a little miffed. I also have a H like that and when talking to him he said he wanted cash and on a weekend its hard to get that much cash so I drove 80 miles to look at it and put money down then went back the next weekend with the rest of the cash I got a bill of sale but you still wonder when you give someone cash.

I didn't tell him 100% I would take it but I told him I was heading straight down when I got word from him with the trailer. That means a lot to me.

In his defense I could just be a tire kicking talker. It is tough to turn down $1000 in cash when it is in your dooryard.

I sell quite a few, and the seller
could have been a little more honest.
I tell lookers and callers I will work with them,
but if somebody shows with my asking price in cash,
it's sold unless I have a deposit.
Usually makes them hurry up a bit.

If I'm the buyer and it's a good deal,
when I call I don't talk cash/check.
I just get the address and go.
Weekends, I always take my checkbook.
If the banks are closed and we come to a deal,
I tell them I will write a check for the full amount
and need a bill of sale.
If they don't like checks, I ask them to take the check,
complete the deal with a bill of sale,
and I will come back the next day with the cash
and they can give me my check back.
Last one I bought, after I gave him my check, phone number, address
of my bank for him to cash it, and the time the next day
when I would bring the cash...
He looked me in the eye and said the check was good enough.
Guess I passed his honesty check.

I had guy sell a goosneck trailer out from under me last fall. I ended up buying a lot better one for a few hundred dollars more. I will say in the sellers defense two things. I would rather have cash than a check. Also, with the limited amount of items I have sold I still have had so many people tell me they wanted somehting and then you never hear fromt hem again.

It happens pretty often, things have a way of working out in the end.
You will probably end up with a much better H, there are plenty of them out there. Next time, if you want it jump on it quick, good ones don't last long. Take cash & have a trailer ready in minutes.

Fact of the matter is somebody showed up at the dad's place with the cash while you were dickering on the phone with the son. Any way you play it he got there first.

When I make arrangements to go look at something I always tell the guy that if someone shows up before me with a stack of $100's, don't turn him away.

I got one right now that's pi$$ing me off royally, though... There's a guy with a W4 on craigslist, and I'm ready to show up on his doorstep with a stack of $100's. He didn't put a phone number in the ad, and apparently he doesn't get email because I've sent him messages four times in the past week with no response... The ad's still up so I've gotta assume the tractor's for sale still.

I agree, the thing is I had the trailer hooked up and I was waiting on the son "who listed it for his dad" to tell me to leave the house. Meanwhile somebody contacted the dad and bought it. (I was never given the opportunity to talk to the actual seller and that was my downfall) I didn't drag my feet at all. I was waiting on him to tell me to come. Oh well.
