New use for old IH oil filter....one of my bright ideas!!!

When I started tearing into my F-12 I was excited to pull out this oil filter. It cleaned up really nice and I hated to toss it. I've had it sitting on the bench in the garage since last summer and one day I thought about making a lamp out of it. I tried fitting it with some different copper fittings on either end and keeping my eye out for something to use as a base. Nothing ever seemed to work just right and I didn't want to spend any money so it just sat. So this past January when I was moving back home from NY I was in an accident and rolled my truck. Other than my truck being totaled this lamp that I had just bought became a pile of scrap. About a week ago I saw the filter sitting on my work bench and was reminded of my plans for it and I thought of the junk lamp that I had yet to throw away. Tonight my wife and youngest boy were busy while my oldest boy Gabe stayed at home with me. I told him my plans and with a huge smile on his face and big bright eyes he was immediately excited to help!!

One of the light sockets was beyond repair and I didn't really want a really tall floor lamp so we cute one off. This was one of those lamps that screwed together in 3 different sections. I cut one down and made it to fit inside the lower part of the filter. We then drilled and riveted it to the filter. A piece of 1/2 in copper fit perfect over the top part of the filter and I found that a 3/4x1/2 fitting reducer fit nice and snug inside the tube sections of the lamp. As you see in the pictures I soldered that all together then riveted it all together.

I must say it turned out very nice. It was so nice to spend a few hours with Gabe working on something together after me being away from home working so much lately!!

Way cool. Working or playing with ones offspring is
great.
I played with my 19 year old today (and 3 friends)
target shooting with several different guns. A
great time.
Thanks for sharing. Jim

What a cool idea!!I have an old F-20 oil filter with
IH cutouts that would make another great lamp.

NOT IH ,so please no one shoot me here!!!! lol(But you can do it with IH caps,If you wanna???)

Did the same thing with some hubcaps I had I "found" while cleaning the garage. They were NOT good enough to use on a NICE car,but I hated to throw them out!(You know how us machinery collectors get!!!) With about 10 bucks in hardware and the wheels off of our first grill we ever bought, this is what I did on a "bad whether day!!" It cooks a mean fillet! Single guys grill!!!

That's awesome!! I wish I had more experiance and the tools for welding and working with different metals. That gives me an idea for what to do with the original hub caps off my '73 K20 that I'm getting ready to restore.

What a coincidence! My fiance just had me buy a filter just like that at the IH winter convention so she could make a lamp out of it!

Seth I have a box full of those filters they are new and little cub filters too. Next time your down well go through them.
