Hey guys I am looking at an IH 504 this weekend and was wondering if the tractor would be able to pick up a 1500-1800 pound bale with out any major problems.

Thanks for the input

It'll probably do it, but that 504 isn't built heavy enough in the front to do it very many times without breaking something. A 706 or 656 would be a much better choice.

I have a IH 504 with a 2001 loader and it will pick up a round bale. I have used it for years for that but really that tractor is too small for round bales. It will lift a 1500-1600lb bale but anything much heavier and it won't lift high enough to put it into a bale feeder. It also gets pretty light on the rear wheels and gets tricky on soft or frozen ground. I am really surprised about the front axle and spindles because they have never had a problem--all original and have never been welded or repaired. They are stronger than they look. We are careful with a big bale however--move slowly and avoid holes or anything that could break the front end.

My 504 IH will lift a bale but it is light on the rear. Check the front axle where the power steering cyl bolts, I have had the bolts break on both my 504 and 656U. just two bolts, and if the housing breaks it is $150.00 for a new one.
