12V vs 6V IH O.E.M. Style replacement coils UPDATE!

To all that were interested in the post I made farther down about buying a new IH coil.

I just got off the phone with the nice gentleman at O.E.M. tractor parts. He is telling me that THIER 12 volt coils DO NOT need a ballast when used on a 12 volt system. He is ALSO telling me I CAN use their 6 volt coil on my 12 volt system,IF properly ballasted.he is also telling me they assemble their coils here in the U.S.,but parts are foreign(As we know.)

He said he would also call me back with ACTUALL Ohm readings off of BOTH of these coils,(probably monday) That way we will know for certain what these coils really are and how to ballast accordingly. I dont wanna "fry" any points.

This whole coil discussion has been very interesting. I will be watching for the results.

I always thought the coils from my points cars were 6 volt and hence the resistor wire that was bypassed during starting; full 12v for extra bang for starting and 6 for steady running to enhance point life.

I've used car coils on tractors for quite a while now with no resistor and no problems other than cleaning the points every couple years.

You can go to any IH dealer and buy their 6 volt coil, 396546R93, but you will need a resistor, 1940950, to drop voltage from 12v to 6v. Or you can buy 12v coil 396547R93 and just hook up to 12v power with no resistor needed. Or
order a PerTronix coil with more power.

I am leaning that way Jim.I just want to see the ACTUALL Ohm readings on these new coils. From what the first guy is saying(NOT quite sure if it is accurate???) I am thinking these coils have enough internal resistance already that they might not need any external ballast added??? (DO NOT KNOW AT THIS TIME!)

I am STILL gonna do the resistor bypass that you mentioned.I have a dozen or so diodes laying around. The starter motors on both my Ford 600 and My Super m are definitely "robbing" my coils of voltage on start up! My first clue is when I am cranking the SH!T out of them and they fire up WHEN I RELEASE THE STARTER BUTTON !!!! My Super m has backfired HARD sometimes when I am releasing the starter button, and then took off running!!!! When it is cold out,My ford wont even start.Pushed it out of the garage when it was warm, started, but not easily.Left it set out a few hours in the cool.WONT START AT ALL !!!!

Here again, using the the term "6 volt and 12" volt coil is kind of inaccurate!

After reading what some of the electrical experts have stated on here, the ONLY way I am sure WHAT a coil actually IS ,is to check them ALL with an Ohm meter.I bet you could take a dozen coils made by different manufacturers, Both advertised as 6 or 12 volt, test them with your ohm meter, and get all different results???They would probably fall within a certain range, but would be different.

Another thing also.ANY component you install BEFORE that coil is causing some kind of resistance! So if you have a key switch that has dirty contacts inside,or if you ran 50 feet of wire from that key switch to the coil,or installed TOO big of a ballast resistor,ECT,ECT,ECT,ALL of these can drop what is actually making it to the coil!!!! When replacing a coil, you might want to check the WHOLE ignition system out.
