Glow Plug System

On tractors using a BD154 engine (and on others, I suppose) there is a coil wound glow plug indicator between the glow plug switch and the glow plugs. Is there any compelling reason for that coil to be wired into the system, or can I run a wire directly from the switch to the glow plugs?
Thanks,
Alan

There's a new tech glow plug available for your engine now. Dual-coil, 12 volt fast-heat and eliminates the need for that indicator/resistor. I put them in two of my British IHs and they work nicely. Heat in 10 seconds instead of 60 - and burn-out proof.

The original plugs are wired in series and operate at less then one volt each. The new Bosch plugs run on 12 volts and get wired in parallel.

Thanks everyone-
I had assumed that the indicator was the problem, since it had been before, but when the customer showed up I just tightened the glow plug connectors and things are working fine!
I'm really interested in the new glow plug design. LJD...could you give me a part number and/or source??
Thanks,
Alan

Bosch came out with the new dual-coil, fast-heat plugs for the old Mercedes 190D. 190D had the same system as the IH B275, B414, 3414, etc.

Those indicator/resistors burn out. I was surprised to find they are made in Germany and not by British-Lucas. When they do go, it's just as cheap to put in the newer and better plugs and eliminate the indicator. Last one I did, I removed the indicator and put in a LED indicator light instead.

you talked me into it, just ordered 4 of them on Amazon

have one of my 23C adapters done but haven't been out in the woods to see how well it fits

used very long reach autolite plugs and drilled/tapped the shells to fit the NGK glow plugs, sure heat up fast

LJD: I just purchased a 3444 with a backhoe attached. The engine is a BD154. For the life of me, I am unable to determine what the stock glow plug part number should be (Champion AC-28 plugs were installed, all 4 are burned out). But rather than buy new ones, I'd prefer to switch to your 12 volt solution, and about that I have a question:

Are the new glow plugs the type that work in the BD154? And is the glow plug thread size all the same on every BD154 engine? I keep hearing about some made in the UK, some here, etc., so I am confused.

For a switch to fire them up, is anything special needed? I haven't seen anything mentioned about resistance of the new plugs, or the current draw.

Thanks for the trouble you went through to publish your approach to the new glow plug design. It seems to have helped a lot of people.

Gary
