Went by a local mans house today to look at a couple tractors he had. That story will soon be in another post. He has this plow he's wanting to part with. Of course this caught my eye being it's nothing Ive seen around here before.
Who can give me any info about it? What is it? What was it meant for? What is something like this worth?

Dad has talked about using a plow like that to break up the old
pasture. The big coulter to cut through the bogs and the long land
slide to try to keep it straight. They had an old Case tractor they
pulled it with in the slowest gear possible, and a bunch of dynamite
to blow up the rocks in the way!

that is an old breaking plow pulled behind the 15-30 mccormicks.once the land was cleared this is how the country was opened up.
actually it looks on the light side to me , the real breaking plows seemed to have a much heavier frame. but thats the principle of it.

That is one interesting plow. It looks like a plow
competition style moldboard and land slide. The
colter also looks like overkill to slice right down
to the point. Very interested in what others say,
or identify. It is clearly a tractor plow with
levers directed to the driver. Cool Jim

Seth, where do you live? If you don"t buy it, I"d like to go take a look and most probably buy it.
LA in WI

That is what we call here in Indiana as a new ground plow for just what has been stated here as to clear virgin ground and turn over tough conditions for future farming.

A lot of people will call a regular moldboard plow a "breaking" plow by mistake.

THIS is a real breaking plow.

I think this plow would be referred to as a "brush breaker"(or something like that) plow, although as others mentioned looks to be a little on the lightweight side. IH made a model 451, I believe was the number, with a larger, heavier moldboard and a coulter even larger than this one. Yes, these plows were for "new ground"; plowing under bushes and other various woody vegetation. Note the solid furrow wheel, probably to keep trash and debris out from between the spokes. Saw a larger version of this type plow in Florida they used in the old days to plow under palmetto.
