H Farmall Rim Paint

Luv Farmalls

I am restoring a H Farmall and I am getting to the point to where I am painting the rims. I know that orginaly the rims were galvinazed. So I was wondering what is closest to that in color to OEM ? I have been using PPG paint on the red so give me your ideas.

PPG 8568, a GM rally wheel color, sort of a silver gray, not too bright but works well for me.

I liked the Rust-Oleum's "Hammered" Aluminum spray cans. I'm no painter, so the all the runs, drips and errors made it look like real galvanizing. It'a really a nice, speckled-looking silvery / galvanized-looking finish.

I'm not so sure about that whole galvanized thing. I recently put new rear tires on my 1950 H that has NEVER been repainted, and BOTH rear rims showed definite signs of having been painted ALUMINUM with a brush. I could still see the brush strokes. BOTH rear rims were exactly the same. I used a wire brush on an angle grinder to clean the rims up, got right down to bare metal, and saw NO indications of ANY galvanizing.

During the IH sponsered repainting programs of the '50s, the front and rear rims ALL got painted with aluminum.

You guys can argue with me till the cows come home, but the CORRECT paint for the rims IS aluminum.

I have a set that are for sure galvanized, but who knows if they are original. What is aluminum paint?

The same exact rims were also used on Case tractors (silver colored) and on John deeres (painted yellow). Those rims were made by Good-Year, Firestone, etc., and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have used 2 different types of materials. Would not have been cost effective. So either all of those were galvanized, or none of them were, but in any event, I think all of them left the factory with some kind of paint on them.

Buddy had some Toyota silver left over from doing some work on his Daughter"s car...I had never found anything that made me REAL happy so I tried it...I liked it! I keep using it...I can get ya the number if ya"d like! Pete

I use the Rustoleum Hammertone Silver in quart can, put it on with a nice sharp 2" sash brush. Nice and thick...can't hardly make the stuff run, yet it lays down flat with no brush strokes. Easy to touch up too...can't even tell it.

we have a Yellow 42 H that has the rear rims galvanized on it, and its NOT paint on them. ive ssen a few other early H's and M's around here that the rims are galvanized

And just to add,

Thre guys at the factory/dealerships were NOT pro, custom painters either! (Just good workers! ;) The original paint jobs and dealer jobs would look good, but NOT like a George Barris custom!!!!!

Correct me if I am wrong experts.

I sprayed the rear rims on my H with the Hammertone paint as well a few years ago. I thought it turned out pretty good and has held up well.

I used Rustoleam Aluminum paint on my rims, I put it on pretty heavy with several coats using a foam brush, and I really like the way it turned out.

rusty you are pretty spunky today. john mcnaull said they were plated from the factory and that's good enough for me. he was an ih man since before world war two and he passed away last month. ih dealer at ashland ohio for many years.

Did he also mention that the IH sponsered repaint programs used aluminum paint on the rims?

I've been on this earth since 1951 and pretty much grew up on the seat of a Farmall H.

I don't believe anyone questioned the notion that dealers may have repainted the rims during the life of any tractor. The original question was if there was a "color of choice" out there close to the color of the original galvanizing. All the tractors that I own of this era that did not have a coat of paint on them already were galvanized, including the H above that has never been repainted until I did.
Here is a poster of an IH ad to repaint tractors to "Give your tractor the New Look", including the [i:80acd84430][b:80acd84430]muffler, tires and rims[/b:80acd84430][/i:80acd84430].

I have 7 IH tractors, 9 until a couple of weeks ago. Oldest was a 41 H newest was a 460. I assure you that ALL of them had/have galvanized rims. Any paint on any of them had galvanized under them.

Plated rims off a original 50 M tractor with no paint. Thats not the original cast wheel though.
