Rebuilding a 1941 H (my grandfather bought it brand new). The block is now stripped and have found the crank has a melted center main. In the process of rebuilding the engine now and wondering when one decides to pull the sleeves and replace them with new? Two of the four cylinders I can feel a slight ridge with my hand, the other two are smooth. Also, how are the sleeves removed. I know a puller is the best option, however at this point I can't seem to find one to borrow.

If you run you finger nail or a knife edge up the
cylinder and get caught up then its time for a new
set of sleeves. You however should check for out
of round as well, a bore gauge is a great tool. As
for the sleeve its self you really need the
puller. You can weld them up but you must be
careful not to weld the sleeve to the block. If
you not handy with a welder would not recommend
that. Last choice is that you can use a
screwdriver and or chisel to get them out, really
not the best way at all but can work if there not
in too too hard. Try and find a puller youll thank
yourself after.

The sleeves and pistons are so inexpensive it would be a
shame not to put in some fire craters while you have it
apart.

Are you still looking for a sleeve pulling puck? Do you know if your sleeves are original 3 3/8" or if they"ve been bored to 3 7/16"

Unless you are on an extremely tight budget, just replace all 4 sleeves and pistons. The actual cost will not be all that much greater than doing a patch job. Do it right the first time and you'll never need to do it again.

Yoooper....Yes, I am still looking for a puller. My uncle tells me that in the early 50's my grandfather pulled the sleeves and had the pistons enlarged for more power. Guessing that was the 3 7/16". I can mic them tomorrow to know for sure.

I have looked at prices and understand the low price to replace. It only makes sense now that you put it that way. :D
