Finally rebuilding the engine on the m. The kits on this site are a no brainer - I will order one as soon as I make sure what pistons are in it now and have a look-see inside.

My question is head rebuilding. I know there are so many factors, but assuming there are no surprises, what is reasonable to pay? I'm in northeast Kansas if that makes a difference. I just have no idea what's fair since I am more used to the old vw engine heads. This is lots sturdier!
 
My disel heads were between $200 and $400 here in SE WI. They have 4 more valves than a gas head so that makes the price go up. When I had the $400 one rebuilt it needed all new seats. Both got valve guides.

EDIT - That $200 had another $75 added to in now that I get to thinking. I took it to get surfaced only the first time. Then I took it in to get a complete going over and that was $250ish. So really it ended up costing somewhere in the low to mid $300s. It didn't get seats but got valves ground, surfaced, valve guides, and pressure checked.
 

I just got my 400 diesel head back from Noland's Cylinder Head Service of Kansas City, Mo. It cost $453, and included surface grinding, pressure testing, new valves seats on the exhaust, and installation of all new parts (provided by me). The head had no cracks. Noland's was recommended to me by an antique tractor restorer near KC.

I was blown away by the number of heads stacked around the shop when I walked in the first time. There had to be hundreds of heads of all types.
 

I took 2 Farmall H heads to the machine shop just last spring, and said "fix 'em" Both heads needed all new seats, and both heads needed some milling just to true them up. Also had both heads hot tanked. Valve guides were good to go in both heads. I already had new valves, springs and keepers.

Total cost at the machine shop was just over $500.
