856 starter

(quoted from post at 12:40:23 03/04/12) Totally different mounting and part number. The diesel starter will also be far more powerful.
Jim

It will bolt right in the clutch housing but the gear will be too small to engage the flywheel teeth.

If you were to replace the smaller gas starter gear with the one used for the diesel the starter would not be able to crank the engine very fast and the diesel needs cranking speed to develop enough heat to ignite the fuel spray.

(quoted from post at 15:48:49 03/04/12) The parts layout shows a radically different nose
piece, so that is the reason for my input. Jim.

Your answer was completely correct. The drive end frames are different and the starter will not work on a diesel.

I don't even know if the drive will move far enough forward to line up with the ring gear or if there would be enough room to install the larger gear in the starter. His question was would it bolt into the diesel engine. It will bolt right up, it just won't work.
