m block drain

What is the block drain (the one below the carb) on an m made of? I twisted off the "ears" trying to remove it and I am wondering if I can weld a nut on it to get it out. This is a working tractor on the farm, so pretty isn't clear at the top of the list. It's on there, but so is running and earning its keep.

In my experience most were nodular iron pipe plugs.
If yours has "ears" it may have been replaced with a different plug to make it convienient to drain water (when that was the common way to prevent freezing)
Many of those were made of White metal, zinc, pot metal. Try a magnet on it if it is iron it will take a braze. If nodular iron it should weld with Ni-rod. Jim

Original plug had ears, was iron. I must have worked at IH dealer for ten years or more when a farmer saw me trying to get a wrench on one and he showed me what the crank was made for. Works great if ears are intact.

all m's came with block drain plugs made out of cast iron with ears to use the crank to remove it like another fellow said. the original cap on the radiator drain was the same way, ears to fit the starting crank to remove for draining, which before anti-freeze was very commom to do with every use in cold weather.

Quite possible as I encountered M Farmalls from an operator point of view after 1955. Maybe all those (and ours) were broken off/replaced with plugs. The rad drains were winged. Jim

Yup. Both the block drain plug and the radiator drain cap were designed to be able to use the hand crank to remove them.
