McCormick W6 / Super W6 seat.

I need some help. I posted a picture of some sheet metal on a W6 that is for sale and people started contacting me about the seat. From what I gather I think this is a late Super W6 seat after they went to the frame rails. Are they really that sought after?

I think that is the SAME EXACT seat that is on my Super M???? I do not think it is that rare?

Correct me if I am wrong experts.

I hope not. That looks like the seat and brackets on my SMD, and I'm going to need a seat pan. I hope I can save the flip-back bracket, but someone has tack welded it together. The metal seems to be fairly solid and straight so I can't imagine why it was welded. Maybe I'll find out when I cut the welds.

I think the reason someone welded yours is because the hinge might be worn and sloppy. If the hinge gets TOO loose,it will let the seat move around quite abit.I am going to have to eventually weld up the hinge holes on mine and redrill them and get new pins.It is getting kind of loose.

You forgot to mention it likes to pinch your fingers, especially when sloppy loose.

Careful use of a die grinder with a cut-off wheel will cut through those welds. You probably will need to replace the hinge pins, and maybe even do some repairs to the holes the pins go through, but with enough patience, I think you can save it.

Only thing thats not common on the seat is the mounting frame under the seat on the transmission top. Frame was used on SW6TA tractors. Also IH sold some attachments later on like that # 361040R91 to install on W6 tractors serial # 7035 and higher if wanted.

I can understand why those seats are more desirable--IMO they were a big improvement over the pipe mounted ones. I have one on a Super W-6 with the tub frame and one on a Super WD-9, always thought they were original. Then last week I looked at a Super WD-6 with rail frame and it had the pipe seat. My Super WD-9 parts manual only shows the pipe seat. My question is did the better seat actually come factory or were they installed later?

Seats were sold as a package sometime in or after 1954. Tractor owner had to go back to the dealer to purchase it. Or at one time the parts were sold each. Reason for the package was a improved ride.
