MD steering gear

Hey guys! Replaced the bolster bushings and wheel bearings on my MD last weekend. Also turned the steering shaft down and installed a bushing at the center support. However I noticed my sector gear was significantly worn (more than I have ever seen before). Unfortunately it is not a full round so I cant just turn it (trying to locate a couple GOOD full rounds to keep on hand). Anyway, wondering if I could make some hardened steel shims to put below the gear? Thought if I shimmed it up maybe .100 or .125" the gears would at least be contacting a little bit of fresh steel. Thought???

I tried that once on an H and it worked, but not for too long and then it was back to having some play in it. I figured it wasn t getting full contact and so wore back pretty quickly. Good used gears would be best IMO.

IAtractorKid; Ironic that you ask this question now. I just returned from the National Farm Machinery Show and asked that very question. Try the Bates Corporation in Indiana. Their representative at the show told me they were available new for about 100.00. 1-800-248-2955 or www.batescorp.com

Here's one right from this very site.

Steering gear

Yeah I did some searching and ended up finding the new ones...$150-$200 depending on where you look. Apparently you can even get the full gear from IH; I think it was around $315 from them!

Im going to spend some time looking for a couple good used ones before I buy new.
