Farmall A seals, bearings, and gaskets

It's warming up pretty consistently here in Louisiana, time to get back to the A. First up, I figured out last year (with the forums help) that I need to replace seals and bearings in the final drive to fix my wheel wobble on the left side. Also, the transmission is leaking quite badly on both sides, out the pto, and possibly in the front. I'm thinking I should just replace all seals and bearings in the whole rear end. Is there a kit I can buy for that or do I just look up all the part numbers individually and go to my parts place of choice? What would your parts place of choice be, and about how much money am I looking at for all this? As always, I appreciate the help.

No kit, get all the numbers and have a seal/bearing place cross them. CaseIH has them but they are 30-50% higher than other places. I replaced all the seals, gaskets, and bearings in my Super A rear drives, transmission and PTO. I don't remember the price as I did not buy them all at once. A "few" hundred dollars.

Not sure what your plans are for the tractor but I would plan on all the seals but would evaluate the bearings when taken apart.
You might be surprised how good some of the bearings are.
No use to buy them if you don't need them.
I would recommend a local bearing /seal supplier.

Are you sure your rim isnt mounted bad on the center. If that isnt the problem the axle in the final drive is bent to make the wheel wobble a bad bearing would make the wheel tilt inward with the wt of the tractor causing that. You better jack it up so you can determine what is causing the wobble. Does it make a terrible noise when driving slow cause if the bearing is shot the gears would not mesh very good and make a bad noise.

Not to talk you out of changing all of your seals, but if it's leaking that badly, I can almost guarantee you that your transmission is overfilled (or has lots of water in it).

There's only supposed to be about 5 quards of tnas oil in there.

I know I had the same leaking problem on mine, drained it to put fresh stuff in and what came out filled a 5 gallon bucket. (this was right after I bought it)

After I replaced the correct amount - no more drips.

If you're ripping it apart anyways, by all means do the job right and replace them all. But if you find your wobble problem ISN'T bearing related as somebody else here suggested, you may find you can hold off on doing the seals too.

Apparently we helped him figure out that the wheel wobble was a bearing problem last fall...

Plan on having someone there to administer the Heimlich maneuver when you discover how much this project is going to cost you. You can easily spend $500 on seals and bearings.

IMHO just replace what needs replacing.

I just got back from napa, am in shock. I only priced one bearing and one seal, but He said he'd cut me a deal if I bought all the bearings and seals for the transmission, final drives, and pto. He said if I did that he'd sell me the bearings for the axle at $50 each and mark the others down by the same percentage. That bearing started out at $75.

About the wobble, I can 'rock' the wheel back and forth a good bit, I jacked it up and determined that the axle has a good bit of "slop" in it, that's why I'm thinking bearings.

This requires additional meditation, methinks.

If you take off the cap on the inside of the final drive you mite find out the nut is loose allowing the axle to move in and out what kind of noise does it make when driving around in 2nd gear slow. If the bearing on the axle is bad the gear would make some loud noise

Now this could be some of the best news I've heard all day! As for noise, I don't really recall hearing any obvious noise. I haven't had it running since last fall and I have a few small maintenance tasks to tackle before starting it up again.

So, right now I'm hoping that I find the transmission in overfilled, the loose nut in the final drive accounts for my wobble, and I manage to get through this without having to install seals and bearings. If that is possible, I will be a happy man indeed! Thanks all for your help.

The guy at napa said It might also be possible to take the bearings that aren't worn too badly and remove all the ball bearings, clean and re-grease, replace ball bearings and reinstall. But he also said it would be a major pain in the hiney. any thoughts?
